Grateful books
Very impressed with the set. For a young boy and he was over the moon. Great condition and a huge selection of books with big and smaller stories for a range of different reading. Also has some illustration so brilliant for breaking up the book and keeping kids engaged with visuals to help with imagination.

This, fortunately, is Dahl before Puffin's 'démolissage'
It is years since I read any Dahl, but I do still appreciate the quality of his writing. Words matter, but IMO not in the way Puffin and its sensitivity readers would have us believe. The driving purpose behind my now buying, rather late in life, this particular collection of his children's stories, published in 2016, was to express in some way my abhorrence of the recent démolissage wreaked upon Dahl's words by Puffin, as widely reported in the press in February 2023.The Telegraph online, 17? Feb 2023, helpfully published a list of just some of the hundreds of 'edits' (to put it politely) implemented in Puffin's '2022' (?? it's all a bit vague) edition of Dahl's children's stories. According to the DT there are 59 changes in The Witches alone... For example:“A witch is always a woman. I do not wish to speak badly about women. Most women are lovely. But the fact remains that all witches are women. There is no such thing as a male witch.”That has been flattened to read “A witch is always a woman. There is no such thing as a male witch.” Oh dear...Elsewhere "White as a sheet" is now (yes, you guessed it. Not!) "still as a statue" . Words almost fail me.Yes, there were amendments in earlier editions, but not in the swathes to be found in the '2022' edition which, from the examples I have seen cited online, massacre Dahl's evocative writing.***THE GOOD NEWS IS *** that the boxed set of pbks advertised here, published in 2016 with the UNIQUE identifiers ISBN 9123517662 or 978-9123517664, contains relatively unexpurgated versions of Dahl's children's stories. The titles are: Matilda - Going Solo - The Giraffe And The Pelly And Me - George's Marvellous Medicine - Fantastic Mr Fox - The Magic Finger - Esio Trot - Boy Tales Of Childhood - Charlie And The Great Glass Elevator - The BFG - The Witches - The Twits - Charlie And The Chocolate Factory - James And The Giant Peach - Danny The Champion Of The World - Billy And The Minpins. And in case you're wondering, the illustrator in this boxed set remains Quentin Blake ( I gather from reading another press account of Puffin's censorious behaviour that he too may have been given the chop in places in the new edition...).Enjoy!Btw the French translates as hatchet. Plus job.POSTSCRIPTPuffin, in the wake of the public outcry, is now promising to release both versions of all Dahl's children's stories. So be doubly wary of which version you are buying of ANY of them, whether hardback, paperback, e-books*, or even audio: they may be jumbled together on product pages. Good to have the original copies
Grew up with Roald Dahls books and decided it was time to ensure I have the full collection to pass down to my children someday before they get totally censored
