holy moly
The media could not be loaded. ok so here is my review. for the love of god please where gloves when applying this stuff and eye protection and a REAL fume face mask. this is super important. if your not painting outside go full PPE. don't go to hospital with a suspected heart attack like i did after inhaling varnish for 1 hour. ok boring stuff over, here's the good bit.you can sponge this on, gives decent results especially if you go with the grain. tin recommends brushing, i cant brush, and it was crap for me and i ended up making it run. someone with more experience could get way better results then me in good light. So i opted for the following.i contacted Johnstons to ask for help but they just said, brush it on, either way i bought a spray gun for my compressor. i diluted the varnish on a ration 10:1, cleaned surfaces with white spirits before spraying, i was doing a 50% overlap with my cheap spray gun. i get 2 coats down, it touch dries in 2-4hrs so u can go again. after 2nd coat i WET sanded it with 400 grit, now im applying it on wood sanded to 400 grit. the bench in video and picture is sanded to 400 grit, then applied a final coat. (second bench i sanded the 2nd coat to 800 grit, would have done 600 but only had 800). with these steps you'll get a really nice mirror finish. its a beautiful amber finish on very light coloured birch plywood. this plywood i used is BB grade cabinet plywood.i gave the product 3 stars for "easy to use" because in all honesty, you need to be ready. preparation is key. have paint finer and rags at hand to clean everything after, brushes, sponges guns, cups etc. if you spray it like i did, (i sprayed in shed) your entire shed will get sticky.all being said the results speak for themselves, if you take care to clean each coat with a rag and white spirits to make sure its super clean, you'll get fantastic results. I emailed Johnston's and told them they should update their tin with correct drying times and that it can 100% be sprayed.drying times i experienced are, touch dry: 2-4hrs depending on how thick the application is. if its sticky after 4, you applied too much.Cured: 16-24 hrs like it says on tinhope this helps, this really is a good product if you take care the whole process. Bench is now outside in the rain and water just runs off no problem. i like it so much i bought a 2nd tin already and this will be my goto product for outside stuff.

Apparently not what it says on the tin.
I recently had to cut 60+ square feet of plywood into a dozen finished panels and then varnish them. I knew I still had some varnish that I'd already used to good effect and started the varnishing using that. It was this Johnstone varnish. Before I finished the tin I ordered a fresh one here on Amazon.I had seen another seller offering it slightly cheaper and they also claimed a much shorter drying time. I knew from experience that the timed quoted on the tin was, as advertised here, up to 24 hours. I didn’t buy from them because their negative reviews were aimed at the delivery company. When my order was delivered it was in exactly the same design of tin as advertised and identical to the one I had just emptied. However, when I opened it the contents instead of looking like runny golden syrup had a tinge that looked similar to Methylated Spirit. It went on just fine and as I then suspected it might, it dried in the four hours the other seller had quoted, in spite of what it said on its tin.The varnish appears to have been reformulated and presumably they are cutting the costs by using up the old tins. The shorter drying time makes it a better buy if the outdoor performance hasn’t been compromised.
