Q: Is the device shielded against the electro magnetic pulse caused by a nuclear detonation?

Excellent Question! While I can't be 100% sure without disassembly, I would conjecture the answer is "NO" given the low price. I used to work in the defense electronics industry (retired) and we protected our plastic cased devices from EMP by nuclear hardening of the semiconductor components (expensive) and/or coating the interior of the case with metal (using conductive paint, a copper electroplate layer that provides the shielding with a thin protective coating of immersion tin or electroless nickel. Given that the Geiger-Muller tube is embedded in the case (that has no holes or slots over the G_M tube), and the fact they say it detects Beta particles, I doubt this device has that EMP coating as Beta would be blocked by such a coating. If this assumption is correct, the device may not survive an EMP. To protect this and your other electronics, I would purchase metallized ESD bags to enclose them in. (I bought a bunch off of Amazon) If you have a lot of devices to protect, build a Faraday cage with wire mesh over a wood frame. Ground the wire mesh for good measure.

FNIRSI GC-01 Geiger Counter currently has no plans to update the firmware, we will report your needs to the engineering design department.

Q: Can this device read alpha radiation?

The documentation says it doesn’t respond to pure alpha radiation. Probably because alpha is so easily blocked by almost any solid material. So there probably aren’t too many radiation detectors in this price range that can. Since alpha is so easily blocked, it’s the type of radiation to be least worried about.
