You are getting 1000mg of Magnesium Chloride (MC) and 120mg of elemental Magnesium which is derived from the MC . There are actually 9 types of Magnesium where Magnesium Citrate is the most common taken by people. However, Magnesium chloride has a higher bio-availability than magnesium citrate.

Q: Is this magnesium chloride hexahydrate?

Yes, it appears to be so. It is easy to figure it out. The formula for magnesium chloride hexahydrate is MgCl2.6H2O, with the twos being subscripts properly and the dot should be raised a bit to the middle of the line (don't know how to do that here). But what is important is that there one magnesium atom, two chlorines and 6 water molecules per molecule of magnesium chloride hexahydrate. The way you start to figure the answer to your question is to divide the atomic weight of magnesium by the molecular weight of the entire molecule. This yields what has been called a "gravimetric factor." Magnesium has an atomic weight of about 24. Chlorine is about 35.5, hydrogen is 1, and oxygen is 16. Given the formula for the entire molecule, it would have a molecular weight of 24 + 2(35.5) + 6(18) = 203 [water is two times one (hydrogen) plus 16 (one oxygen) =18 so that is where the 18 comes from]. The gravimetric factor is used to get the ratio of magnesium to the total molecule. It is 24/203 = 0.118 (atomic weight of magnesium divided by the molecular weight of the whole molecule). Now given that a serving is supposedly 1000 mg yielding 120 mg of magnesium, multiply 1000 mg by .118 to get 118 mg of magnesium per serving. Their figure of 120 mg is quite close and consistent with the hexahydrate.
