I think they're called google eyes and can be found at most craft stores.

Q: I am using red heart super saver acrylic yarn and I can't seem to get the middle tied tightly enough. Any advice?

Wrap your tying piece of yarn around the pom, make the start of a knot, pull as tight as you can and then wrap tying yarn half way around so you are on the opposite side of the pom. This time start a k or again and pull, continue to finish the knot. Pull on a couple of pieces to make sure they are tight
