This works fine, in both reading and writing. Have used it so far just with text-type data. For the price, is a good deal. My only complaint is the ludicrously short cord, which greatly limits where the device can be placed. The manufacturer seems to be worried about loss of power with too long a cord. The instruction leaflet says to plug it into a port on the back of the computer because that is closer to the power source. But I got a three-foot extension cable, plugged it into one of the front ports on my desktop computer, and the CD drive still works fine.
